God not only shaped you uniquely, but He also planned every single day of your life to support that shaping process. This means that nothing in your life is insignificant. Our lives are the sum total of the choices we have made. Therefore, if you are in a certain circumstance, God means it for good. The universe is completely safe for you. Nothing comes to you unless it first passes through God’s loving hands. You have no reason to fear.
You need to know who you are in Christ so that when you make decisions, you know what to do, when to do it, where to go, and how to do it. Your faith will grow stronger as you focus on your identity in Christ (Galatians 2:20). Abandon any image of yourself that is not from God. Stop accepting what others have said about you, how they’ve labeled you, or how they’ve defined you.
Start by embracing your freedom. The greatest freedom is freedom from the tyranny of our own desires, agendas, and plans. The next greatest freedom is from the tyranny of other people’s opinions about us. As long as our well-being depends on someone else’s thoughts or actions, we will feel the need to manipulate them—and that is why it’s impossible to truly love someone that we need.
A good first step is to believe what Father God says about you: that He is pleased with how He created you, and that He alone defines you. We are not defined by our feelings. We are not defined by the opinions of others or by our circumstances. We are not defined by our successes or failures.
The truth is, if we don’t know who we are, we’re vulnerable to letting others tell us who we are. But the concrete, solid truth is this: We are who God says we are—and no one else has a vote in the matter.
