God means for us to be where we are. God has led or allowed us to be in a situation and
God is sovereign. God is love. He didn’t put us in this situation because he stopped loving
us, but because he loves us. We aren’t there by accident. We are facing issues in our lives
by God’s appointment and for his purpose. We may not have a clue as to what God’s
purpose in the situation is, but we can rest assured that God has not abandoned us. He
has a purpose for us. That realization and stories I have heard led me some lessons we
can learn from 9/11, ‘The Annoying Little Things’:
My friend Kathleen told me about how she was scheduled to take a deposition on the 89th
floor of the World Trade Center at 9 AM on 9/11. However, because of an upcoming
project at her husband’s firm they were forced to reschedule their Portugal vacation. This
in turn caused Kathleen to postpone her deposition from 9/11.
As you might know, the head of a major company survived the tragedy of “9/11” in New
York because his son started kindergarten and another fellow was alive because it was
his turn to bring donuts.
One woman was late because her alarm clock didn’t go off in time. Another was late
because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident.
One of them missed his bus. Another spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to
change.
One’s car wouldn’t start while another went back to answer the telephone.
One had a child that dawdled and didn’t get ready as soon as he should have while
another couldn’t get a taxi.
The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took
the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his
foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.
Now when I am stuck in traffic…miss an elevator…turn back to answer a ringing
telephone…all the little things that annoy me…I think to myself…this is exactly where God
wants me to be at this very moment.
The next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting
dressed, you can’t seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light…don’t get mad or
frustrated; remember that God is at work watching over you.
We must trust God enough to let go of our expectations and desires. Sometimes we get
so focused on what we want that we miss the things God has prepared for us! We need
to relax with God while He transforms us by the renewal of our mind as this works His
newness into our innermost being! May God continue to bless you with all those annoying
little things – and may you remember and appreciate their possible purpose.
