We have no control over how our soul feels. You can stand in the ocean waist-deep, and think that a wave is not going to knock you over. However, in spite of all you do you’re eating sand at the bottom of the sea. Some things you just have no control over. One of the things we have no control over is whether our soul is going to be in a funk, or on top of the mountain. It is what it is. God created us this way. Our soul is constantly fluctuating. One minute, you’re in a good mood, and the next minute, you’re in a funk.
The good news is that our soul does not determined our true identity in Christ. The fact that I am a child of Christ is not dependent on whether I’m in a good mood, or a bad mood. Sometimes we don’t feel like Jesus. Sometimes we don’t act like Jesus, but that does not mean that Jesus is not our life. So why did God create us with a soul that is constantly swinging back and forth from good moods to bad? Good question. Let’s talk about that.
God is trying to wean us off of our soul. If the only time we are going to trust Him is when we’re feeling good, you better believe that the devil is going to try and make you feel bad all the time. Remember the state of our soul is dependent upon what we think. Satan will give you a lot of things to think about that distract you from the awareness of your Oneness with Jesus. Sometimes he bowls you over with bad news. Sometimes the devil will just try to kill you with a thousand little cuts. You worry about one thing then another, and before you know it, you’ve got a case of stinking thinking. That is why God tells us to take every thought captive and make sure it lines up with the Truth. Jesus is the Truth, you know.
Whenever you have a thought that makes you feel down, ask the Lord if that thought has come from Him, or somewhere else. God wants us to depend “souly and solely” on Him every minute of every day. The devil wants to distract us from thinking about how much God loves us and cares for us. So he plants little seeds of doubt and confusion in our minds. Before long we are worried about all sorts of things. Did I turn the water off in the bathtub? Did I pay that bill? Is my upset stomach cancer? A thousand little cuts. One won’t kill you, but if you don’t stop the bleeding, you will succumb.
Now don’t get me wrong. We live in a fallen world with a soul created by the Lord. Our soul is constantly being altered by what we think. What we think determines how we feel. That’s why God tells us to think about things that are true and honest and pure lovely. The devil will lie to us. He tries to make our thinking stink. That’s why the Bible warns us to stop complaining. Griping not only defiles us, it slimes everyone who has to listen to it. It leads to stinking thinking. Stinking thinking leads to stinking feelings. The devil tries to get us to believe that we are what we think. We are what we think only when what we are thinking is the truth. Jesus is the truth. Keep your eyes on Him. And don’t beat yourself up when your soul gets out of whack. It is going to get out of whack until Jesus comes back.
If you’re in a bad mood now, get some rest. Go get something to eat. Go do something you love to do. Sooner or later, your mood will change. Wait for it. Don’t make major decisions when you’re in a bad mood. Keep resting in the Lord with all your heart and soul.
Jesus never changes. Our soul is constantly in the process of change. Hang in there. One day Jesus is going to be our life without the hindrance of a constantly changing soul. In the meantime, understand that you are a soul man, or woman, and don’t get bent out of shape just because your soul does.
Blessings,
Kenny
