The Power of the Tongue

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”—Proverbs 18:31

I bet you didn’t realize that you have a lethal weapon in your mouth. That is what God says. He, most of all, knows the power of the spoken word. He spoke the Word and all the worlds came into order. He waved His hand and planets filled the empty sky.

Do something for me right now, will you? Think back to a time when someone said something really nice to you that just blessed your heart. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Did you come up with one? How did it make you feel? I’ll bet it made you feel good just thinking about it even though those words might have been spoken years ago. Am I right? I thought so

Now think about something that was said to you that reached right into your chest and tore your heart out. Something that discouraged you or made you angry, sad, etc.  I know that you don’t like to think about those kinds of things, but just bear with me a minute.

When you thought about those words, it was almost as if it was happening all over again, right? You still remember it vividly. That parcel of memory, whether you admit it or not, is still affecting your life and attitude today. The spoken word has great power just like God said.

Romans 10:9-10 says… “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘’Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

“Saved” means more than going to heaven when we die. Jesus came to save us from our sins. That means saving us from the defilement and destruction of sin. He wants us to live in joy and peace… not sorrow and confusion. He wants to live His Life in us, through us, for us, and as us.

Do you see how important confessing the truth is? Confess in the Greek is “homologeo.” It means “to say the same thing.” To confess God’s truth, His Word, means that we agree with what God says. When we confess anything that does not agree with God, we are agreeing with the adversary, the devil.  You do not want to get in agreement with the devil. Watch what you say!

In Mark 11:22, Jesus says… “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.” Is that power, or what!?! If what you say can move mountains, then that little tongue has some more potential.

Do you have a mountain in your life that is blocking your view of Jesus? Ever felt like you could make it if only you could look Jesus in the face? Well, you can. You just have faith in God. Speak the Truth to that mountain, and it must move out of the way.

What’s your mountain? A lost relationship? Sickness? Finances? Depression? Discouragement? You may not even know the name of the mountain that is causing you so much grief. Ask the Holy Spirit to identify your mountain. When the Lord identifies your problem, speak to it and command it to leave.

Here’s one way to do that:  Confess Romans 6:1ff and substitute your mountain for the word sin. Let’s use discouragement as an example…  “What shall I say then? Shall I continue to be discouraged that grace may abound? God forbid! How shall I that am dead to discouragement live any longer therein.”

Don’t tell God about your mountain. Tell your mountain about your God.  As you confess the Truth, that old mountain will come down. I guarantee it on the authority of God’s Word. Keep those bulldozers of confession up and running. Put on your helmet of salvation and watch out for falling rock!

Blessings,

Kenny
