You Have Not Because You Ask Not

“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him?” (Matthew 7:9-11 NLT).

An old proverb goes like this: “Wise men do first what fools do last.”

John Bunyan said: “You can do more than pray, after you have prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed.”

How many times have you tried to find a solution to a problem without success? How many times did you only pray as a last resort after you couldn’t figure it out? Why didn’t you pray first? Could it be that we don’t trust God? Or do you falsely think God wants you to do it on your own? What can you do on your own since Jesus tells us that without Him, we can do nothing? (John 15:5). Do you erroneously believe that God doesn’t have time for your small stuff like where did you lose your keys?

God cares about every tiny detail of your life. He knows the number of hairs on your head, and He knows that #s 3, 12, 18, and 27 went down the shower drain this morning. A sparrow does not fall to the ground without God knowing and caring about it. Do you not think you are worth more than many sparrows?

When you lose your keys, do you think God knows where they are? Duh! Do you think He would tell you where they are if you asked Him? Of course. Then why do you spend hours and days searching for them before even asking Him to show you where they are?

I can tell you a myriad of stories of people who have learned to ask Jesus when they need something. I will give you one about my grandson, Jackson. At eight years old, he wears glasses. And you know what that means. He leaves his glasses everywhere and forgets where to put them. We have taught him to ask Jesus to tell him where he put his glasses. And Jesus never fails to tell him.

The other day, he lost his school journal in which he writes down all his assignments. He came home from school the next day and his dad asked if he had found his journal. Jackson said, “I asked Jesus where I put my journal, and He told me. Here it is.” Out of the mouth of babes.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.” God created us to live in 100% total dependency upon Him for everything. He says that He will supply our every need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Then why don’t we ask. He delights in our asking. James tells us that we have not because we ask not (James 4:2).

Does God know more than you know? Then why are you trying to figure stuff out on your own. Ask Him. What are you waiting on?

Blessings,

Kenny
